Home is the place that gives shelter when the weather is bad. These long days of rain and low temperatures are testing the houses, specially the roof and the thermal insulation.

In addition to that, we have the humidity. A dark spot or directly water on a wall is an evident sign that something is not working properly. There are fundamentally two kinds of humidity inside a building:

The common leak is due to water (mainly from the rain) that gets through the waterproof layer that must protect most of the roofs, or because it gets through some weak points like an old joint or a rusty window frame or a part that was not correctly made when built.



But we must also consider the humidity by condensation. This issue is very important in places with mediterranean climate, like Javea and other towns in the Costa Blanca, with a high relative humidity in the air during all the year. Its a physical fact that the air can have more humidity as higher is the temperature.

When the temperature gets lower, the air can't support the humidity it has and discharges it like water. This is the reason why the dew comes soon in the morning, just when the temperature gets to the lowest level. This same process can happen inside a house. A bad insulated and bad ventilated house has a high probability to show condensation humidity during these days. This is evident for example when an old house gets its windows renewed, with a very airtight new ones, without considering the ventilation needed in the space.

Clarifying these concepts, we want to emphasize that not every leak inside a house must be repaired with waterproof paint, sometimes the solution can be completely different or even more simple.
